Police given city noise guidelines MIKE BERRY The Star Courier Kewanee now has a new noise ordinance which should make it easier for police to deal with noisy neighbors. The ordinance, approved last week by the City Council, defines downtown Kewanee as an “entertainment area” and sets decibel limits for acceptable sound levels in the area. It also allows police officers to cite residents “if the officer has probable cause to believe the noise is unreasonably loud and raucous.” Citations may also be issued if a neighbor signs a complaint. Police have a decibel meter for measuring sound levels, and the ordinance sets limits on how many decibels are acceptable.
Local animal groups vie for control of city pound Susan DeVilder The Star Courier KEWANEE — Which organization will receive the contract to operate the city pound could be decided at the next Kewanee City Council meeting scheduled for May 24. Both Friends of the Animals and the Henry County Humane Society/Kewanee have submitted bids for a three-year contract, with the option for two additional one-year extensions. The request for bids was announced by Kewanee Police Chief Nicholas Welgat in April with a deadline for responses due May 5. The decision was expected to be decided at the city council meeting on May 10, but City Councilman Chris Colomer experienced a medical issue and left the meeting, which postponed the vote. At the time, Mayor Gary Moore called the decision to award the pound “too important to make without participation from the full council.”
Moore, Bradley lawyer up after former employees file lawsuit MIKE BERRY The Star Courier Two former city employees filed lawsuits in federal court last month against the city of Kewanee, and Mayor Gary Moore and City Manager Gary Bradley individually, seeking “at least” $200,000 in damages. Rodney Johnson and Deborah Johnson maintain in their legal actions that their terminations of employment violated the city’s administrative code. In addition to the damages, they are seeking benefits they say they are owed, reinstatement of their status as city retirees, and access to the city’s health insurance under the COBRA law. Deborah Johnson, who started with the city in 1992, had been the city’s accounts and finances director, and Rodney Johnson, a city employee since 1995, was the public works operations manager.
Mayor Moore recognizes life-saving firefighters Four Kewanee firefighters were saluted Monday for saving the life of an ambulance patient. During Monday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Gary Moore praised firefighters Andrew Welgat, Tim Doubek, Phil Esquer and Joe Rediger for their work to revive the patient. The patient, a Courtyard Estates resident, was being transported on the ambulance when the incident occurred, the mayor said. The four firefighters were able to revive him and get him to the hospital. Moore said the firefighters would probably say they were just doing their jobs, but he feels they are a great credit to the fire department.
