VANCOUVER -- Mayors in the B.C. health region hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic are challenging each other to boost local vaccination rates. In a friendly competition, mayors across the Fraser Health region are seeing who can achieve certain immunization thresholds – and ultimately community immunity – first. The challenge will mark milestones at the 70, 75 and 80 per cent immunization marks. For now, those measurements will be calculated based on first doses of COVID-19 vaccines. ALDOT’s ALGOtraffic.com website lists the road as closed until noon on April 30. That does not, however, necessarily mean that it will remain closed for that long. Burkett said drill crews have taken samples from the impacted area an...

Mentone camps eager to reopen for summer 2021

Mentone summer camps are relieved to get the go-ahead to hold summer sessions in 2021, according to Mayor Rob Hammond. Hammond, who is owner of Camp Laney, said Friday that the camps will be subject to the same social distancing and sanitation guidelines as schools. Although he did not have an exact dollar figure, the cost of not opening in 2020 was “substantial” and impacted most businesses in town. While the hit to the overall economy was cushioned by very strong cabin rentals, camp owners were deprived of a year’s worth of income while continuing with operating costs such as...
