Seoul’s former mayor died last year in an apparent suicide after his secretary accused him of sexual harassment. Now, an investigation by a human rights watchdog in South Korea has found that her accusations were credible.
In a report released Monday, the independent National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRC) found that former mayor Park Won-soon’s words and actions toward his secretary constituted sexual harassment under the country’s laws.
The finding is significant as the alleged victim’s case against Park who was South Korea’s second-most powerful official when he died was never heard in court. ....

The Seoul city government apologized Tuesday after the state human rights watchdog deemed the sexual harassment allegations against former Mayor Park Won-soon to be true.
In a statement, acting Mayor Seo Jeong-hyup said the city government humbly accepts the results of the National Human Rights Commission s investigation into Park s alleged abuse of a secretary, which lasted several years until his death in an apparent suicide in July.
We sincerely apologize to the victim and her family, who are undergoing a time of suffering, and to all citizens who felt great concern and disappointment due to this incident, Seo said. ....

SEOUL, Dec. 16 (UPI) South Korea saw its daily total of COVID-19 cases hit a record high on Wednesday, as health officials weigh raising distancing measures and scramble to secure more hospital beds amid an outbreak that shows no sign of slowing down.
Wednesday saw 1,078 new infections, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said, topping the previous high of 1,030 set on Sunday. The country also reported 12 fatalities, one day after reaching a record 13 deaths, while the number of seriously ill patients jumped by 21 to 226 overall. ....
