CNN New Day With Alisyn Camerota and John Berman September 5, 2019 10:08:00

But at 1:00 which was predicted to be the worst, it was only a 7 1/2 foot tide. so we re just thrilled about that. we got a few hours here to pass the wind that we re seeing right now. and they re predicting a heck of a lot of rain. in about six or eight hours we ll be through this and ready for recovery. you said you wanted this city to be a ghost town, why? so people would be out of harm s way. and late last night as i went around, it was just that. people were out of the streets. they were safe. they were either out of town or hunkered down. and so i m so proud of our citizens for responding to that call for safety and staying out of harm s way. i know about 300,000 people or more actually evacuated the coastal areas. that call was made fairly early. did that go as orderly as you wanted it to? absolutely. governor mcmaster make the call early. we supported that decision and helped with the reversal. that gets a lot of folks out of ....

Sorry. neil: absolutely. governor mcmaster was right in what he did. we support him in this decision. being safe rather than sorry and looking after the safety of our citizens. so they called a mandatory evacuation. he orders everyone to leave. about half the folks left. the others hunkered down and stayed indoors. pretty respectful to stay off the streets as we asked them. so i haven t had a single report of anyone being injured in my city, which i feel great about. so let the naysayers speak, i guess. neil: to your point, mayor, he was trying to defend his position that you did very eloquently saying, i m not shouting, there were no exclamation points, referring to his social media messages. i said hide from the wind, run from water. we evacuate from a storm surge. ....

i think for the miryrtle bea area we re most concerned about the storm surge, especially with the high tide. that s something we really can t prepare for. we re just going to have to deal with it and get the word out that people need to not go like drive into standing water. it s just too dangerous at this point and we expect much more of it throughout the day. have most of the people there in myrtle beach heeded those evacuation orders? yes. we believe they have. we actually had about 100,000 people visiting here for the labor day weekend. so when governor mcmaster issued the mandatory evacuation for zone a, we feel very confident that the majority of those people did pay attention to those warnings. and what are we telling the folks who chose not to who decided to stay behind? pay attention to changing ....

Parts of this city will flood just at high tide, let alone 10 to 15 of rain. the big news at the moment is that governor mcmaster has ordered the reversal on interstate 26 heading out of charleston, inland from charleston. that was to be suspended at noon. that s being extended until at least 2:00 p.m., around 2:00 p.m. they say the traffic coming out of charleston is at or near capacity, and they re telling folks that the governor, department of transportation, emergency folks are telling people if you re going to evacuate, you need to be in your car now. but it s a sign that they re heeding the warning precisely because of the high, high risk of flooding in this area. charleston has historically you heard from chad myers seen very high water during some of these storms, the highest being hurricane hugo in 1989. forecasters are saying we could see a surge in water level almost as high as hugo. a little higher than irma and ....

Some pictures of homes and businesses along the water that are boarded up. but, guys, folks don t seem to be very concerned, not too concerned. they are stocking up on food and water. but they are not terribly concerned right now. governor mcmaster here has issued a mandatory evacuation order for several coastal counties. and i 26 running from charleston to columbia has been reversed so people can get out of here and by the way, yeah, time is running out. this is really the last day to make your decision if you are a family that lives in this area because the airport, guys, closes at 3:00 p.m. no flights coming in or out so you better make a decision soon. steve: that s right. aishah, thank you very much. folly beach, which is just down the coast from there, they are expecting 7-foot storm surge, 10 inches of rain when the storm finally comes on. yesterday i believe at 4:00 in the afternoon they stopped people from going onto the island. ainsley: did they? i would say folly beach is wh ....
