My work involves archival research in Italy so I get to spend time there most summers. Bologna is my home away from home. If anyone puts it on their itinerary, be sure to see the anatomical theater (medical classroom) at the Archiginnasio (16th century university building right near the main piazza) Santo Stefano, a complex of churches sometimes known as the Seven Churchea) is unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. Make the trip up to the Basilica of San Luca in the hills outside town – a 2 km walk up a covered stairway to a church that holds a miraculous Madonna and Child.

The summer before my final year in college, I moved to Boston, slept on a friend’s floor (later, a couch when he bought one), got a job, and pretty much devoted myself to soaking up all the culture I could. My Octopus Teacher was amazing. It’s up for a 2021 Oscar. We try to catch the Oscar-nominated short films every year. We haven’t yet watched every short documentary, but I can recommend any of the three we did see so far: A Love Song for Latasha, about a 15-year-old who was shot by a storekeeper in LA in the 90s for no reason at all, Do Not Split, about the 2019 Hong Kong riots and the 2020 security crackdown, and A Concerto is a Conversation, about the pianist / composer who provided all the music for The Green Book.
