The final sovereign green bonds framework of India has been approved by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. A statement from the finance ministry said this approval would further strengthen India's commitment towards its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) targets, adopted under the Paris Agreement, and help in attracting global and domestic investments in eligible green projects.

Finance Minister mentioned issuing sovereign green bonds to raise money for green projects when he presented the budget for the fiscal year 2022–2023.

Green bonds are financial instruments that generate funds for investment in environmentally sustainable and climate-suitable projects. Also, green bonds command a relatively lower cost of capital compared to regular bonds.
