Event organisers said the competition was a success despite more than 150 participants staying away due to adverse sea conditions. Hosted by the Hawke's Bay Sports Fishing Club, the annual four-day fishing competition was forced to shorten to a one-day event due to rough seas. But club president Neil Price said 425 people still took to the water in hope of winning the $10,000 prize.

Earlybird entries with the Hawke's Bay Sports Fishing Club closed a fortnight ago with 319 on the books – an earlybird entries record and about 130 up on last year, when 438 anglers and 124 boats had entered by the time all entries closed.
