The island of Corfu is located off the western coast of Greece, where extreme temperatures have caused wildfires.

Greece has warned that seven regions across the country are facing “extreme fire risks” as tens of thousands, including Brits, are evacuated. The island of Rhodes has been engulfed in flames for six days but the situation became more severe over the weekend.

Unprecedented wildfires, fanned by a dry spell and heatwave, continue to ravage Greece, forcing evacuations from villages in Rhodes and Athens. The fire, initially detected on the island of Rhodes, known for its resorts, has spread almost to its centre, the Greek Fire Service reported. While no immediate threat to residential areas was written, people in Apollonia, Laerma, Eleousa, Salakos and Dimylia have been warned to prepare for evacuation. The fire that broke out in Dervenochoria, north of Elefsina on Monday and is spreading further into western Attica has several active fronts, said the Fire Brigade's spokesperson Lt. Colonel Yiannis Artopios during a special briefing on Wednesday evening (Greece time).
