Saskatchewan’s restaurant and bar industry is still struggling to understand and comply with COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the province in November, a spokesman says.
Jim Bence, president and CEO of Hospitality Saskatchewan, which represents restaurants and bars in the province, said Thursday he believes businesses should receive a warning and get a chance to rectify any issues before a ticket is issued.

On Wednesday, Bud’s on Broadway became the fourth bar identified by the province as having received a $14,000 ticket for allegedly violating restrictions.

Ten of the 28 tickets issued last year for violating COVID-19 restrictions were withdrawn or jurisdiction was lost, and only two fines have been paid in full.
Five ended in convictions and the other 13 charges are awaiting a court date. The number of tickets issued in January is not yet available, but the province took the unprecedented step last week of naming three bars that were issued tickets worth $14,000 apiece for alleged violations.

A co-owner of Mr. D’s Stats Cocktails and Dreams says she feels targeted after receiving a $14,000 ticket for not following public health orders.
Mia Danakas-Weinkauf is speaking out after the encounters she had with Saskatchewan Health Authority officials, who she says gave mixed messages.
“I don’t understand what we did wrong, everyone was wearing masks, we had only 75 people in here,” said Danakas-Weinkauf. “There was only three or four people at a table, and some only had two, we turned away 100 people, we even locked our doors.”
