Renesas announces IoT security certification for RA devices

Renesas announces IoT security certification for RA devices
Renesas has announced both PSA Certified Level 2 and Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP) certifications for its RA Family of 32-bit Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers (MCUs).
The company s RA6M4 MCU Group devices with the Flexible Software Package (FSP) have been PSA Level 2 certified, expanding on the PSA Certified Level 1 achieved by RA4 and RA6 Series MCUs. Renesas’ RA6M3, RA6M4, and RA4M2 MCU groups have achieved SESIP1 certification with Physical and Logical Attacker certifications.
Renesas said that in addition to these widely recognized industry certifications, the company s RA MCUs now offer customers improved levels of IoT security by combining Secure Crypto Engine IP with NIST CAVP certifications on top of Arm TrustZone for Armv8-M. ....

New opportunities for medical devices

New opportunities for medical devices
This past year saw the COVID-19 pandemic put the future of healthcare, and healthcare technology specifically, under a microscope.
Leading the way on that future is connected health, which looks to offload the healthcare system through self-monitoring Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, which has been made possible by new innovations like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices.
Whether it’s a smart thermometer automatically feeding data back to a hospital’s cloud, or connected blood pressure meters that measure blood pressure readings over a longer period of time, the benefits of BLE make these applications viable thanks to a combination of low power requirements, disposable batteries, affordability, small solution size, built-in security and extensive IoT connectivity. ....

AI: how low can you go?

AI: how low can you go?
Markets are subject to fads and the embedded-control sector is far from immune to them. In the 1990s, fuzzy logic seemed to be the way forward and microcontroller (MCU) vendors scrambled to put support into their offerings only to see it flame out.
Embedded machine learning (ML) is seeing a far bigger feeding frenzy as established MCU players and AI-acceleration start-ups try to demonstrate their commitment to the idea, which mostly goes under the banner of TinyML.
Daniel Situnayake, founding TinyML engineer at software-tools company Edge Impulse and co-author of a renowned book on the technology, says the situation today is very different to that of the 1990s. ....

STM32U5 MCUs address power saving issues

STM32U5 MCUs address power saving issues
STMicroelectronics has unveiled a new generation of extreme power-saving microcontrollers (MCUs), the STM32U5 series.
This new generation has been designed to meet the most demanding power/performance requirements for smart applications including wearables, personal medical devices, home automation, and industrial sensors.
Built upon the highly energy-efficient Arm Cortex-M processors, the STM32 MCUs are already in billions of domestic appliances, industrial controls, computer peripherals, communication devices, and equipment managing smart cities and infrastructure.
The new STM32U5 series teams the efficient Arm Cortex-M33 core with ST’s proprietary power-saving features and on-chip IP cutting down energy demand while looking to boost performance. The line also adds state-of-the-art features that are needed by modern applications, including advanced cybersecurity with new hardware-based protect ....
