While multiple tailwinds continue to ensure that mid-cap stocks are able to outperform border market indices. What these tailwinds are going is that they have pushed the valuations to a much higher level. This increases the challenge of buying the stocks. In such times, it would be better that investors should be cautious in selecting the stocks, better to go with buying in smaller quantities and keep some cash allocated for the stocks, but only to be used on the day when there is absolutely chaos on the street. In the last couple of weeks a debate has started on the street that large cap stocks have done nothing in the last two years, whereas mid-cap has given stellar returns during the same period. The question is whether one should expect the same performance to continue or should one go by logic that because something has done well in the last two years the law of averages will prevail which essentially means that there is a low probability the same returns will come in the next one or two years. ....

It appeared as we are close to repeating the last quarter of calendar year 2021, when in the same period, this segment of the market witnessed change in direction. While it cannot still be ruled out, the way things are panning out, the probability of that happening appears to be lower at least at this point of time.
