Some gunmen have again reportedly attacked the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State, killing one person. The gunmen numbering about 20 stormed the INEC office at Ahiazu local government headquarters in two SUVs on Saturday. The hoodlums reportedly wore attire suggesting they were members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).  ESN is the militant wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a secessionist group seeking to break away from Nigeria. 

Gunmen have reportedly killed four police orderlies attached to Imo State former governor, Ikedi Ohakim during an attack on his convoy. Ohakim’s convoy was reported attacked at Oriagu in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state on Monday evening.   The former governor escaped by whiskers but his backup vehicle was not lucky as the hoodlums bombed the vehicle leading to the death of the four policemen in his convoy.  

The Imo State Police Command says it has arrested one of the notorious commanders of the Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network, identified as Lance Corporal Nwangwu Chiwendu, aka Onyearmy, a deserter from the Nigerian Army. SaharaReporters had exclusively reported how Chinwendu who was allegedly responsible for training and recruiting people into ESN was arrested during his father’s burial.

Gunmen on Saturday intensified their attacks in Imo State by setting ablaze the building of the Imo State High Court in Orlu, and destroying part of the structure housing sensitive documents. The development is coming few days after some gunmen attacked the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri, which the police said was carried out by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). It was gathered that the complex is housing both the high court and a magistrates’ court.
