Minari is named after a Korean vegetable that thrives in the most hostile ground. It grows back stronger after its first season – a fertile metaphor for an immigrant family’s tenaciousness in rooting themselves in a new community. The minari we see in Lee Isaac Chung’s film was taken from his father’s own crop, which is fitting for a film so lovingly wise about the ties between the generations, and which features one of the most believable, likeable, families to appear on screen in a long time. It tells its story lightly, in vignettes bursting with compassion and wry humour, photographed softly like a dream. In a year in which prejudice against Asian-Americans reached a terrifying peak,

'Minari' review: A poignant, modest drama of grandiose hope

Express News Service
What holds a family together? Minari’s protagonist Jacob Yi (Steven Yeun, an Oscar-hopeful for Best Actor) seems to be convinced that money is the key. As a South Korean immigrant in America, he is done sexing chickens in California and wants more out of life. As the film opens, we see Jacob and his family move into their new home in the remote hinterlands of Arkansas. He has spent his savings buying a piece of land that he wants to farm. Jacob strives hard to be the provider of the family, and it makes sense for him to be obsessed with creating wealth for his wife and two children. However, his wife Monica Yi (Han Ye-Ri) disagrees. “We can’t save each other, but money can?” she asks her husband.

How to Watch Minari — Where to Stream & Rent the Oscar-Nominated Movie

Minari has been the talk of the town.
Loosely based on director Lee Isaac Chung's own childhood growing up on his family's Arkansas farm, this endearing story follows a Korean immigrant family as they uproot their lives in California and move to the rural Ozarks in search of a better future.
Patriarch Jacob Yi (
The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun) is determined to build a farm to grow Korean produce for vendors in big cities, while his wife Monica (Yeri Han) has trouble adjusting to their new agrarian lifestyle. Her mother Soon-ja (Yuh-jung Youn) arrives from Korea to help care for their children and soon forms a close—and often hilarious—bond with the youngest Yi, 8-year-old David (played by the scene-stealing Alan Kim, whose emotional acceptance speech after his Critic's Choice Award win went viral).

Minari movie review: Tender performances in a Korean family's encounter with the American dream

Alan Kim in Minari (2020)
|
Plan B
Minari is filled with disagreements large and small – between husband and wife, faith and disbelief, farmer and land. But perhaps none of them is as memorable as the tussle between a cheeky boy and his kooky grandmother.
Starting out as adversaries and ending up as allies even as the world around them crumbles, this unlikely duo provide the most tender moments in Lee Isaac Chung’s migration drama.
The Oscar-nominated movie, which is in both Korean and English, draws on the filmmaker’s own life. Minari revolves around a South Korean immigrant family rooted in a specific culture but also universal in its reaction to adversity.

Oscar-fav "Minari" shines light on Colorado Springs family — The Know

You wouldn’t know it from watching “Minari,” the award-laden film that could walk away with its biggest prize yet at the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, but the Korean-American family that inspired it lives in Colorado Springs.
That’s because “Minari,” directed by Denver native Lee Isaac Chung, picks up before the film’s Yi family (based on Chung’s own) made it back to Colorado. Instead, it focuses on events inspired by Chung’s rural upbringing, tracing the story of his youth along with his parents, older sister and grandmother as they eked out a living and adjusted to small-town life on an unforgiving patch of Arkansas farmland.

5 Oscar Burning Questions, Including That Crazy Best Actress Race

2. Who the heck will win Best Actress, anyway?
There hasn’t been an acting category this wide open in years, because the last time four different actresses won the Golden Globe, the Critics Choice Award, the SAG Award and BAFTA was, well, never. Andra Day won at the Globes for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” Carey Mulligan at the CCA for “Promising Young Woman,” Viola Davis at SAG for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Frances McDormand at BAFTA for “Nomadland” — and any of the four could quite conceivably win on Oscar night. (Sorry, Vanessa Kirby.)
Day might have the toughest road because she’s the only nominee from her film, but Julianne Moore won as the only “Still Alice” nominee in 2014 and Charlize Theron as the only one for “Monster” in 2003. Mulligan and McDormand have the advantage of being in films also nominated for Best Picture, but Davis’ film could well end up winning as many awards as “Promising Young Woman” or “Nomadland.”

'Minari' Broke New Ground for Storytellers of Color, But Creatives Don't Want to Be Pigeonholed

The Oscar-nominated film navigates the immigrant American journey, but writer-director Lee Isaac Chung, producer Christina Oh and Steven Yeun emphasize its themes are broader than the Asian American experience: "We were just trying to tell something honest."
It was a church scene that first caught producer Christina Oh's attention when she was introduced to the
Minariscript in February 2019 by the film's future star, Steven Yeun. In the handful of pages that he showed her, a white girl of primary-school age approaches Anne (Noel Kate Cho), the young daughter of a Korean American family that has just moved from California to rural Arkansas to chase a homesteading dream. It's the Yi family's first Sunday at a white church, and everyone means well, even if they don't know how to show it. "Can you stop me if I say something in your language?" the white girl asks Anne by the post-service buffet. Out comes a stream of gibberish — "chinga-chinga-chon, chama-chama-choo" — that Anne politely endures, then indulges. It's a kind of racism that's still underdiscussed — accidental, almost benign, yet pervasive and unmistakable — and writer-director Lee Isaac Chung's acuity and generosity struck Oh as something different. "It was a new depiction of our existence among white people," she recalls thinking. "It was done in a way that didn't villainize anyone."
