DHAKA, May 3 (Reuters) - At least 26 people died and several were missing after an overcrowded speedboat collided with a sand-laden bulk carrier and sank on Bangladesh s giant Padma River on Monday, police said. Rescuers found 26 dead bodies and some still could be missing, said Miraj Hossain, a senior police official of the central Madaripur district, where the accident occurred.
Five people were rescued and sent to hospital, he said.
Hundreds of people die each year in ferry accidents in Bangladesh, a low-lying country that has extensive inland waterways and lax safety standards.

We are still continuing the rescue operations along with fire services, local police chief Miraj Hossain told Anadolu Agency.​​​​​​​
The incident happened on the Padma River in the country s central district of Madaripur, around 63 kilometers (39 miles) south of the capital Dhaka as the tiny boat was carrying 31 people, according to Hossain.

At least 26 people were killed as a speedboat overturned after hitting a sand-laden bulkhead anchored in Padma at Kathalbari Ghat area near Banglabazar Ferry Ghat in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila on Monday morning.
Besides, five people were rescued alive from the spot and taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex
One of the deceased was identified as Taher Ali, 35, a resident of Rajor upazila in Madaripur.
The speedboat carrying around 30 passengers left Shimulia this morning and when it reached old terminal at Kathalbari, one kilometre off Banglabazar Ferry Ghat area, around 7:00am, it sank following a collision with the bulkhead, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibchar Police Station Miraj Hossain, said.
