In the mid 1970s, Martin Amis acquired a rather grand new girlfriend: Emma Soames, granddaughter of Winston Churchill. In due course, Amis’s father, Kingsley, was invited to meet her parents at their house in the country. It took quite a while to drive there, and so, on Kingsley’s arrival, Miss Soames’s father politely asked him: “Would you like to wash your hands before we go in?”
