23 feared dead as migrant boat capsizes off Libya - Newspaper

CAIRO: A boat carrying migrants capsized off Libya on Monday, leaving at least two dozen presumed dead, the UN refugee agency said. It was the latest disaster in the Mediterranean Sea involving migrants seeking a better life in Europe.
Tarik Argaz, a spokesman for the UN refugee agency in the North African country, said the Libyan coast guard returned at least 42 survivors to the shore and the capital, Tripoli. Only one body was retrieved from the sea, and 23 others were feared drowned, he said.
The UNHCR and the International Rescue Committee were treating survivors from burns, he added.
On Sunday, five people, including a woman and a child, drowned when a boat carrying at least 45 Europe-bound migrants capsized off Libya. Safa Msehli, a spokeswoman for the International Organisation for Migration, said fishermen rescued 40 migrants from Sundays disaster and returned them to the shore. ....

Over 40 migrants feared dead in Mediterranean - Newspaper

CAIRO: At least 41 people drowned over the weekend when their boat capsized in the central Mediterranean, the UN said on Wednesday, the latest shipwreck involving migrants fleeing conflict-stricken Libya and seeking better life in Europe.
The UN migration and refugee agencies said in a joint statement that the dead were among at least 120 migrants on a dinghy that left Libya on Feb 18. The shipwreck took place two days later, it said. A commercial vessel rescued the survivors and took them to the Sicilian port town of Porto Empedocle in Italy, they added.
The tragedy started when the dinghy took on water about 15 hours after the migrants embarked on their perilous voyage, the UNHCR said, citing testimonies from survivors. Within hours, at least six people fell into the sea and perished, and two others drowned while attempting to swim to a boat spotted in the distance. ....

GENEVA: Delegates from Libya’s opposing sides kicked off a five-day meeting on Monday to choose an interim prime minister and a three-person presidency council in a bid to reunite the troubled oil-rich country before an election in December.
The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, including envoys from around Libya, was meeting under UN mediation in an undisclosed site outside Geneva in hopes of stabilising the North African country that has been largely lawless since Moammar Qadhafi’s fall and killing in 2011. ....
