Thought I’d put my head above the parapet and say Hi. I’m a semi retired Carpenter joiner from the New Forest. Embarrassed to say I bought my Myford ML7 R on a whim 12 years ago and apart from regularly cleaning it in my workshop and wiping off wood dust I never actually used it in anger. Finally have a lot more time on my hands and just treated myself to a Sealey mini mill and a Stuart S50....zero experience within the field although I do have two classic cars and restored a few over the years. I'm all for pictures of models in the narrow sense i.e. of miniature copies of real machines but my definition of 'model' is much wider. Engineering models rather than model railways, toy soldiers, and baby traction engines, lovely though they all are. To me a model is anything that represents the structure and/or behaviour of the real world. Models can be diagrams, words, numbers, formulae, symbols, graphs, 2D plans, and computer programs just as effectively as a physical build. Hi Recently retired and i've always wanted to finish a project of making a working model steam engine that i started with our teacher at school in metalwork. Now seems the right time. I served my apprenticeship as a tuner, back in the late '70's at Crabtree Vickers, but it's been many a moon since i used a lathe, so I've a bought a little ZELUS 7 x 14Inch Mini Lathe to start off with. First though, i think i need to get my eye back in and make a few basic things. Looking through some threads has given me some ideas ,so i'm looking at buying some material "stock". As you probably already know: What machines you buy will depend on a ) What you want to do. b) space available and c ) budget. When you have decided (a ) and (b ), (c ) will need to be drip fed over the years as the need / wish for extra equipment comes to light. So apart from letting yourself in for a lifetime of pleasure, frustration and learning, the almost endless road of decision making extends before you. Be proud to be an Engineer with practical skills, as well as knowledge. You will be one of the band who produced the world that we have today (infections excepted! )
