latest on that deadly shooting rampage in chattanooga, tennessee, a gunman opening fire at two military centers just minutes apart. four marines were killed and three people wounded. a 24-year-old gunman is also dead. he s been identified as muhammad youssef abdulazeez, a naturalized american citizen from kuwait. and this morning, the motive still unclear. our coverage begins with abc s jim avila. reporter: bullet holes and shell casings at the military recruiting center where the rampage began. 10:45, a man in a silver ford mustang convertible, the top down, driving into the strip mall. offices here for all four branches of the military. he just pulled up, and next thing you know, he lifted up his arms like this with a big, black gun, and just, it was one shot and then it was just endless shots, one after another, just unloading into the army. reporter: dozens of shots. one marine hit in the leg. but within seconds, the gunman flees, racing seven miles down the highway to a na
unloading into the army. the fbi has taken over the case. so far, there s no clear motive, but the attack is being investigated as domestic terrorism. well, new details are emerging about the suspect, said to be a naturalized u.s. citizen from a middle-class muslim family. investigators say he appears to have been the lone gunman and looks like he hadn t raised any previous red flags. here now, abc s pierre thomas. reporter: the fbi s identifying the suspect as muhammad youssef abdulazeez shown here in a mug shot from a drunk driving arrest earlier this year. he is 24 years old and sources say born in kuwait. authorities are now investigating if he was inspired by isis or another terrorist organization. sources tell abc news this man was not under active surveillance by the fbi, a classic, so-called lone wolf. the suspect wrote in his 2008 high school yearbook that my name causes national security alerts. what does yours do? we ve learned the 24-year-old was an electrical engin

[ sirens ] reporter: hospital emergency rooms locked down, local colleges, too. back at the strip mall, terrified workers barricading themselves inside stores and restaurants. but 30 minutes after the first shots were fired, it was all over. we are treating this as an act of domestic terrorism. reporter: a community in shock. this young woman carrying roses to honor those who were killed on this terrible day.

on this terrible day. the chattanooga mayor says this attack was incomprehensible and a nightmare, one being felt across the country. jim avila, abc news, chattanooga. and here s what we know about the suspect so far. abdulazeez is from a middle-class muslim family. he graduated in 2012 from the university of chattanooga with a degree in electrical engineering, and reportedly had a good-paying job. abdulazeez was involved in mixed martial arts. sources tell abc news that he was not under active surveillance at any point. at one point, his father was reportedly put on a terror watch list but later removed. president obama promising a prompt and thorough investigation. to the four marines that have been killed it is a heartbreaking circumstance for these individuals who have served our country with great
