UMS: Act fast on the depleting natural resources | Daily Express Online

University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Taufiq Yap Yun Hin underlined the need to preserve natural resources which are limited and depleting at a faster rate due to unsustainable practices, overexploitation and improper management of resources and the environment.
“Because our natural resources truly are limited, we need to use what we have while being mindful of others, now and beyond,” he said during his opening remarks at the 5th International Conference on Southeast Asian Natural Resources and Environmental Management (Sanrem 2021).
According to Taufiq, the concept of sustainable development was defined by the Brundtland Commission in 1987 as a pattern of social and structured economic transformation that optimises economic and societal benefits available in the present, without jeopardising the likely potential benefits in the future.
“It has now grown to become a global agenda which is centred on discussions and expertise on ways to achieve the 17 Sustainable Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations.
“This implies that we cannot talk of harnessing scientific research, innovation and technology for sustainable development in isolation from the global aspirations and agenda,” he said.
He expressed confidence the conference’s driving theme: “towards sustainable development goals” can facilitate presentations and discussions that embraces global aspirations for sustainable development.
“It is hoped the discussions will focus on natural resources and environmental management and their connection to sustainable development, which we seek deliberations on harnessing scientific research, innovation and technology,” he said.
Meanwhile, State Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Yakub Khan during his officiating speech said the State government fully supports the global initiative in preparing suitable action plans in supporting sustainable development (SDG) initiatives as well as the country’s commitment to realise its Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.
“The Ministry will continue to harness the capability and available knowledge to achieve the 17 goals and 169 targets in the Agenda 2030, with focus channelled towards clean water supply, sanitation, natural resource management and sustainable biodiversity, proper exploitation and production, climate action as well as terrestrial and marine flora and fauna.
“The government’s strong commitment towards ‘act locally, impact globally’ shows that by supporting local strategies, technologies tested on the field and implementation of innovative approaches, such steps allows us the potential to reduce harming the environment, realise mutual benefit, elevate living standards and enhance the community as the guardians of natural resources at the grassroot level,” said Yakub

Achievements of Sabah women to date hailed | Daily Express Online - Sabah's Leading News Portal

As Malaysians prepare for National Day 2021, it is time for citizens to cultivate a broader understanding on the true meaning of independence and look beyond the nation’s colonial past.
“To expand the significance of National Day, this event should not be limited to celebrating the country’s liberation from colonial rule in a physical sense but should also lead to a better insight on our roles and responsibilities as citizens to ensure Malaysia’s stability, harmony and prosperity,” said State Assistant Minister, Datuk Isnin bin Aliashnih.
In his speech, Isnin who represented State Housing Minister and Local Government Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, also underlined the need for Malaysians to remember the struggles of the country’s founding fathers to achieve the country’s independence and, subsequently, became a harmonious self-governing nation.
“The creation of the Federation of Malaysia is based on the ‘One State, One Nation’ principle, which is a founding philosophy of nationhood embedded in the constitution,” he said during his closing address of the Webinar Talk session on the State-level National Day celebration 2021.
According to Isnin, Sabah’s path leading to the formation of Malaysia was rife with challenges but managed to succeed thanks to wisdom, foresight and determination of past-leaders.
“The special safeguards for Sabah, the 20-point agreement were accepted by the Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) in 1963 and embedded in the Federal Constitution. They formed the fundamental bases for Sabah and Sarawak to join Malaya and Singapore in the formation of Malaysia in September 1963,” he said.
He further noted questions on Sabah’s position in the Federation can be answered if the people truly understand the meaning of independence, and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the struggles of past leaders in the road towards independence and self-governance.

Tarsiah

During the panel discussion, Chairperson of the Sabah Women’ Advisory Council (MPWS) Datuk Hajah Tarsiah TZ Taman hailed the achievements of women in the state which has progressed by leaps and bounds for the past 50 years.
“Today, women are actively contributing to national development and the economy, in various professions in the country,” she said, noting the growing involvement showed women are no longer limited to their responsibilities at home.
As Malaysia progresses, Tarsiah outlined the involvement of women is becoming more important to the country, noting over 60 per cent of graduates at local universities were occupied by women which showed important progress of women pursuing various fields of knowledge.
“To allow greater percentage of women in decision making processes, the 30 per cent policy for women needs to be realised to allow better governance,” she said, adding women also play important roles in education and guiding the next generation of leaders and talent.
Meanwhile, President of State Youth Council Ahmad Farid Sainuri expanded the definition of “merdeka” by ensuring government institutions remain free and independent from influences that could bring detriment to its effectiveness.
“In order to move forward to build the nation and optimise the use of Sabah’s rich resources, we cannot have redundant policies while delivering services to the people because resources are limited,” he said. He further pointed wealth distribution needs to be improved and be carried out with integrity to ensure it can benefit the people
