India has so far reported four cases of monkeypox - three from Kerala and one from Delhi. The government of India urged the state authorities to be cautious. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the current monkeypox epidemic a global health emergency.  The first case of monkeypox was reported in a child in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire) in 1970.

Monkeypox outbreak: The World Health Organization on Sunday said more than two dozen countries that haven't previously identified monkeypox cases reported 780 cases, a more than 200% jump in cases since late May. 

The Federal Government has called on Veterinary epidemiology officers, field surveillance agents and veterinarians to step up their surveillance activities aimed at picking any possible case of Monkey Pox in animals.

In bid to stop the spread of Monkeypox, the Federal Government has suspended importation of wild animals and warned hunters and sellers of bush meat to relax operation.
