शिवरात्रि का त्यौहार प्रत्येक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी  तिथि में होता है, लेकिन श्रावण मास की शिवरात्रि का महत्व है। माना जाता है कि श्रावण का महीना भगवान शिव को बहुत प्रिय है। भगवान शिव के भक्त तीर्थ क्षेत्रों एवं गंगा आदि पवित्र नदियों से जल लाकर अपने निकटतम शिवालयों के शिवलिंग पर जलाभिषेक करते हैं। इस वर्ष श्रावण शिवरात्रि छह अगस्त को है। छह अगस्त को शाम 6:28 बजे से चतुर्दशी तिथि आरंभ हो जाएगी जो सात अगस्त की शाम 7:11 बजे तक रहेगी। इसलिए शिवरात्रि का त्रयोदशी का जलाभिषेक छह अगस्त को प्रातःकाल से आरंभ होगा। कुछ शिव भक्त इसे हाजिरी का जल भी कहते हैं। शिवरात्रि का विशेष जलाभिषेक शाम 6:28 बजे के बाद आरंभ हो जाएगा। अगले दिन शाम 6:11 तक भक्तगण जलाभिषेक कर सकते हैं। शिवरात्रि का व्रत छह अगस्त को होगा। इसका परायण अर्थात समाप्ति सात अगस्त को प्रातः 6:51 से 3:45 बजे तक होगा।
भगवान शिव की विशेष पूजा पूरे दिन चलेगी, किंतु कुछ भक्तगण विशेष पूजा एवं जागरण में विश्वास करते हैं। उनके लिए छह अगस्त को रात्रि मे निशीथ काल में स्थिर लग्न 12:03 से 1:59 तक रहेगा। यह समय शिव पूजा का बहुत ही उत्तम समय है। प्रातः सूर्योदय 5:50 बजे होगा और उस दिन प्रातः भद्रा 6:50 तक है। इसलिए चतुर्दशी के व्रत का पारायण सात अगस्त को 6:51 से 15:44 तक स्थिर लग्न तक रहेगा। रात्रि जागरण में ओम् नमः शिवाय का जाप, महामृत्युंजय का जाप एवं रुद्राभिषेक अनुष्ठान बहुत ही शुभ माने गए हैं। इस शिवरात्रि में सबसे बड़ा अनुष्ठान तो भगवान शिव को तीर्थ क्षेत्रों से लाए हुए गंगाजल से अभिषेक कराने का ही मान जाता है। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि जब भगवान शिव ने समुद्र मंथन के समय हलाहल विष को पी लिया था और गले से नीचे नहीं जाने दिया तो उनके शरीर में एक विशेष प्रकार की अग्नि की जलन आरंभ हो गई थी। भगवान शिव उसकी व्याकुलता को सहन नहीं कर सके। उनके शरीर की इसी व्याकुलता को शांत करने के लिए भक्तगण और देवता लोगों ने पवित्र क्षेत्रों से जल लाकर कर भगवान शिव का अभिषेक किया था जिससे उनके उस विष का प्रभाव एवं व्याकुलता समाप्त हुई थी। भगवान शिव ने देवताओं और अपने भक्तों से अपने और विश्व कल्याण का वरदान दिया था। तभी से श्रावण मास में यह जलाभिषेक का  प्रचलन चला रहा है। 
ऐसे करें भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न: भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए इन मंत्रों का जाप करना चाहिए। 
-ओम् नमः शिवाय।।
-ओम् नमः शम्भवाय च मयोभवाय च नम:  शंकराय च।मयस्कराय च नमः शिवाय च शिवतराय च।।
-ओम् त्र्यंबकम् यजामहे सुगंधिम् पुष्टिवर्धनम् उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्।।
