American food writer Emily Nunn was spending the pandemic shut up in her house in Virginia. Things were gloomy. She was short of work and on her own a lot. But every day brought a surge of joy as she surveyed the fruit and vegetables she’d picked up in her neighbourhood: the peaches, tomatoes, muscadine grapes, blackberries, golden raspberries and both crisp and soft leaves.

Copper Pot Cooking Studio celebrated its fifth anniversary in March with the installation of a little cookbook library and micropantry, custom-built for them by Girl Scout Troop #6318. Denise Perry, who owns the cooking studio on the corner of MacArthur and Laurel Avenue in Springfield, said that the project had been on her mind for some time. I ve always wanted a little cookbook library out in front of the shop, so I approached Alana Reynolds initially because of her work with Slow Food Springfield. Then the pandemic hit and all these micropantries started popping up it seemed like it d be a perfect opportunity to integrate the two together.

With social distancing and the closure of in-restaurant dining, more of us are spending time building our skills in the kitchen, and what better pairing is there than food and music? Two years ago,
Houstonia staff members wrote about their favorite restaurant meals. This year? Suffice it to say we spent more time than usual in the kitchen in 2020.Â
