SASKATOON Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation is celebrating a victory after a legal battle that’s taken 26 years. The First Nation is receiving a $141 million settlement, plus interest for the unlawful surrender and use of its land in 1905. “It’s nice to know that it’s over and we’re just going to keep moving forward and help our people out and help our community out here,” said Mosquito First Nation councilman Tristan Bird. In January the Specific Claims Tribunal of Canada awarded the first nation more than $126 million as compensation for the unlawful surrender of 14,670 acres of land in 1905.

In February, many in North Battleford were worried about the future of the community’s lone homeless shelter.
That included Lighthouse staff member Suzanna Crozier. She and partner Brian Arcand were worried about the mental health of the clients the Lighthouse deals with, as its impending closure loomed.
“All it took was just a text,” Rose said Tuesday. “I can’t even take the recognition for this. They supported me so much and they were so devoted to (the Lighthouse). They wear their hearts on their sleeves.”
Ahenakew and three others were arrested last September during a traffic stop by the RCMP gang unit in North Battleford on Railway Avenue. Police say officers initiated a traffic stop on two vehicles. They say one occupant was known to police and had an outstanding arrest warrant. Police saw weapons in one of the vehicles and arrested the four from both vehicles. They searched the vehicles and found a firearm, a Taser, weapons, cocaine, meth and marijuana. Ahenakew is charged with possession of cocaine and meth for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a firearm in a vehicle, and obstructing a police officer.
