In a Good Friday tradition dating back 50 years, the faithful of Guam climb the trail to the top of Mount Jumullong Manglo. The annual trek was started by a group of choir boys from Mongmong around 1970, according to Pacific Daily News files. By 1976, hundreds of people were arriving by car and bus, gathering for the morning procession up the mountain. Through swordgrass and mud, they helped one another up a sometimes steep and slippery path marked by the Stations of the Cross. Each year, the group carried a large wooden cross to the summit of Guam s second-highest peak. For the past two years, the observance has been canceled because of pandemic concerns.
