In spite of his importance, there is little information about Pythagoras from contemporary sources. Instead, the first fragmentary accounts of the philosopher’s life are from the 4 th century BC, about a century and a half after his death. It is thought that as a young man, Pythagoras travelled to Egypt and Babylon. This might help to explain the mystical elements of his teachings.
