Chief Justice nominee Martha Koome has defended herself against objections to her recruitment by the Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi based on her handling of a dispute between the National Produce and Cereals Board and Erad, a company associated with the late Jacob Juma.
Before the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC), Koome said her decision, which was shared with other bench members saved the country from losing public funds.
Justice Koeme said Havi questioned her ruling in 2012 in a case where Erad supplied maize to the Cereals Board and obtained a decree to be paid some money but the board appealed the decision.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo has dismissed reports that he sent a text to ODM leader Raila Odinga threatening to resign as vice-chair of the National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC).
Speaking on Citizen TV on Thursday, May 6, 2021, Otiende said Raila had nothing to do with his removal, adding that they frequently talk with the former PM.
“Other than being my party leader, Raila is my client so if I were to snub a meeting with him as the ODM leader, I will still go as a client,” he added.

Chief Justice (CJ) nominee Martha Koome will be vetted by MPs on May 13, in a make or break exercise that will have the final say on her quest to succeed Justice David Maraga.
In a gazette notice dated April 30, 2021, National Assembly Clerk Michael Sialai has invited members of the public to share their submissions in support or against her nomination by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Koome will be vetted by the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) chaired by Muturi Kigano, Member of Parliament for Kangema.

Parliament to hold special sitting to debate BBI Bill

Parliament reconvenes tomorrow to deliberate on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum Bill after the speakers received the report by the Joint committee on Justice and Legal Affairs.
Just a day after National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi called for a two-day Special Sitting to discuss and dispense with the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020, his Senate counterpart Ken Lusaka also called for a sitting.
The JLAC team co-chaired by Senator Okongo Omogeni and Muturi Kigano have submitted the committee report of 171 pages to the two speakers and will be concurrently tabled in the two Houses.
"The Special Sitting will commence from 9.30am and proceed to the afternoon. If there is a spillover, I will Gazette another day to allow members to conclude deliberations," Lusaka told the Standard.

Confusion reigns over the fate of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill after the House leadership differed on the special sitting to debate the constitutional amendment.
Whereas a section of the House leadership led by National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya and his Minority counterpart John Mbadi said the special sitting will be on Wednesday and Thursday, the office of the Speaker indicated that no such plans were afoot.
