announcer: this is cnn breaking news. good morning. john berman here along with christine romans. breaking news this morning. a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake has hit nepal. a new earthquake. the second one, of course. one two weeks ago that killed more than 8,000 people. the epicenter near namche. the gateway to everest. it is on the border with china. kathmandu, you can see crowds here fleeing on the streets. we are told by people on the ground that everyone is rushing outside. traffic said to be snarled. we talked to someone on the ground there. he said the first thing is people are in shock. in the town of tchohara ....
Severe. reporter: it could be. right now we don t have reports from namche the closest town to the epicenter. namche is really the gateway to everest. that is where anyone would go to first to trek up to base camp and further up to everest. everest was closed off because of the previous earthquake and avalanche thereafter. a lot of people wanted to trek in the area around namche. we don t know if there have been avalanches. a lot of homes are made out of wood and mud. so very difficult to tell. too early to assess the damage. you know a lot of concern that this could be another big one. sumnima udas thank you for that in new delhi. she just returned from covering the quake. 8,000 dead in the previous quake. a lot of concern of namche where ....
We are covering breaking news this morning. getting our first reports of death caused by a new magnitude 7.3 earthquake in nepal. international agencies say there were four deaths in the town of close to kathmandu. the epicenter is in the town of namche. the damage can be more devastating since the earthquake was shallow. there are reports of buildings that were damaged in the april earthquake. a lot of trekkers go through namche. we don t know if there are landslides yet. we saw that on april 25th with the first quake. i m checking the wires here. ....
Which is the hub for the trekkers who want to go to everest. the everest expedition had been canceled by the nepal government because of the previous earthquake and avalanche. a lot of trekkers were there to travel to base camp but not summit everest. there are a lot of nepalese there. obviously nepalese who live in namche. there is a lot of concern that this could also be quite big, christine. it could be quite big. it could also complicated the rescue and rebuilding which has been slow. give us a sense of what it is like there before the quake and having just been there and covered it, what this means for the recovery and rebuilding that ....
It s a tragic number. it s expected to rise as we look at a landslide, just 30 miles north of katmandu where the previous 7.8 quake hit. this last quake sent children running into the streets in katmandu. the owner just told us to rush out, so it was pretty scary. i ve never felt anything like this. you had the waves but you couldn t see them. you could see everything moving around you birds flying everywhere. a lot of scared people. joining me now from london is katy tur. what can you tell us? reporter: good morning, jose. what we know right now is there are building collapses, landslides and at least 42 people confirmed dead so far. that number is expected to rise. this earthquake was a 7.3 centered on namche close to mt. everest and 51 miles from katmandu, which you know was ....
