Govt to dish out N$160m to church schools - Education

Government will avail subsidies to the tune of N$161 million towards private schools owned by churches as a means to help them meet their needs during the 2021/2022 financial year.
This is according to education ministry executive director Sanet Steenkamp, who yesterday confirmed the figure, saying only church schools the state has an arrangement with will benefit.
This arrangement emanates from a memorandum of understanding (MoU) dating back to 1990.
Steenkamp was responding to a media enquiry on whether government has made budgetary provisions to the over 200 private schools in the country which have been negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic as far as enrolling and maintaining learners is concerned. ....

30 years after, UNESCO commemorates anniversary of Press Freedom Day

Thirty years after the historic free, independent and pluralistic press summit held in Windhoek, Namibia, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has decided to return the conference to its birthplace.
The World Press Freedom Day has its origins from that conference held in 1991. The summit ended on May 3 with adoption of the landmark Windhoek declaration for the development of a free, independent and pluralistic press.
According to UNESCO, the 30th anniversary will be celebrated in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) from April 29 to May 3, 2021 in the Namibian capital. The conference, which is hosted by UNESCO and the Government of Namibia, will be a digital experience combining both virtual and physical participation. ....

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe, Mar 16 2021 (IPS) - It is not everyday that a young farmer registers success in his enterprise and vows this is what he will do for the rest of his life. Yet this is the story of Lihle Moyo, a 27-year-old farmer from Gwanda, about 160km south of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city.
With little to no experience in farming, Moyo says he took over his father’s plot and turned it into a thriving poultry, cabbage, tomato and onion farm two years ago as an experiment. ....
