The High Court has issued a status quo for three months on encroachment, land grabbing, earth filling and operating brick kilns on Bhadra and Hori rivers in Khulna's Dumuria upazila.
In response to a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), the court yesterday ordered the authorities concerned of the government to submit a report after complying with the directive.
The writ petitioner said the lawmaker from Khulna-5 constituency (Dumuria-Phultola) and former Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda, Dumuria upazila Chairman Ajaz Ahmed, local union parishad Chairman Humayun Kabir Bulu and many others are reportedly involved with the encroachment, land grabbing and operating brick kilns in river land areas.

Brick Kilns in Khulna’s Dumuria: United they kill rivers
Rows of unbaked bricks and large holes dug for brick processing in a grabbed part of the Bhadra river near Kharnia bridge in Dumuria upazila of Khulna. Several local influential people, including elected public representatives, run brick kilns that have occupied the land of the river. The photo was taken recently. Photo: Collected
The Bhadra, once a free-flowing river in Khulna's Dumuria upazila, has been turned into a narrow canal over the years, thanks to encroachment by brick kilns run by local influentials, including elected representatives.
A report prepared by Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Khulna last December listed nine brick kilns, including those operated by a lawmaker and chairmen of a upazila and a union parishad, on a four-kilometre stretch on one bank of the Bhadra in Kharnia union.

Parliament went into its ninth session this morning after a 59-day recess as the last (budget) session was prorogued on July 9.
The session began at around 11:05am, maintaining health guidelines and social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic, as done during the last two parliament sessions.
Due to the pandemic, media was not allowed to cover the session directly.
Instead, journalists were requested to collect news from the live coverage of parliament session on Sangsad Bangladesh Television like the previous two (7th and 8th) sessions.

Bangladesh safe place for all religions: Abdullah
DHAKA, Jan 17, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for Religious Affairs Advocate Sheikh Md Abdullah today vowed to keep up the notion that Bangladesh is a safe place for members of all religions as the Awami League amply nurtures the ideals of pro-liberation force.
“Under the leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we have been able to establish communal harmony in Bangladesh. We have established the spirit of secularism in the country,” he said.
Abdullah, also Chairman of Hindu Religious Welfare Trust, was talking to journalists after he along with members of the newly formed trustee board of the welfare trust paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing a wreath at his portrait on Dhanmondi road no 32 here.

Matsyajibi League: What fishermen get from it?

Bangladesh Awami Matsyajibi League is supposed to work for the welfare of fishermen. But the pro-Awami League organisation has hardly been seen doing so since its inception in 2004.
Also, most of the members of its 111-strong central committee don’t even belong to the fishermen community. They have nothing to do with fisheries either.
Besides, Matsyajibi leaders claim the organisation has a staggering 3.5 crore members across Bangladesh, which is almost one fifth of the country’s population.
Department of Fisheries data, however, shows that the total number of fishermen in the country is around 24.55 lakh. They include some 2.67 lakh shrimp and 22,244 commercial fish farmers.

Govt Contracts with GK Shamim: PWD moves to cancel 15 deals
The Public Works Department has served termination notices to GK Shamim’s construction firm GKB & Company Pvt Limited in a move to cancel the contracts signed with the company for implementing 15 large government projects.
Construction works of these projects have not seen any progress following the arrest of GK Shamim in September.
Of the 15 projects, 10 were being implemented by GKB & Company individually while the rest under joint ventures with other firms.
Top PWD officials informed this at a meeting with the parliamentary standing committee on housing and public works yesterday.
