Govt. cites Cyclone Yaas as reason
The State government on Monday informed the Madras High Court that it had sought the urgent supply of oxygen from western States, since the allocation of 146 tonnes to Tamil Nadu from the eastern corridor (primarily Odisha) may get affected by Cyclone Yaas.
The court was told that Maharashtra had agreed to supply 60 tonnes of oxygen a day for 12 days, beginning Monday.
Appearing before Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, Advocate-General R. Shunmugasundaram said the Centre had increased the allocation of oxygen for Tamil Nadu under the National Oxygen Plan, from 519 to 650 tonnes, with effect from Tuesday. Of this, it had been stated that 146 tonnes would be supplied from the eastern corridor.

Don't reduce vaccine supply to State: HC

‘Procurement through global tenders is a long-drawn process’
The Madras High Court on Thursday ordered that the Centre should not reduce the allocation of COVID-19 vaccines to Tamil Nadu just because the State government had decided to float global tenders to procure the vaccines, apart from the purchases being made from two domestic manufacturers. The court said the procurement through global tenders is a long-drawn process whereas the State is already facing a shortage of vaccines.
Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, however, made it clear that the Centre could appropriately rework the allocation of vaccines to Tamil Nadu as and when the global tenders mature and supplies are received.

Chennai: On May 2, as Tamil Nadu waited for the results of the assembly elections, patients of COVID-19 at Chengalpet Government Hospital (GH) began dying.
The relatives of those patients believed that something had gone terribly wrong, but were too dazed to question the doctors beyond a point. In any case, their focus was on the release of their relatives’ bodies, a procedure that took much of the day.

Acute shortage of oxygen is putting lives at risk, T.N. tells HC

Requirement may shoot up if cases continue to rise: govt.
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday told the Madras High Court that though the Centre had revised the quantity of oxygen allotted to the State from 220 tonnes to 419 tonnes a day, it is still short of the current actual consumption of around 470 tonnes a day. “The acute shortage of medical oxygen on a day-to-day basis is putting the lives of affected COVID-19 patients at grave risk,” the government said.
Appearing before the first Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, Advocate General R. Shunmugasundaram said the State’s oxygen requirement was expected to increase further to around 850 tonnes a day in the next 15 days if the number of COVID-19 patients under hospitalisation on oxygen-supported beds continues to increase in the days to come.

Increase oxygen supply to Tamil Nadu immediately: CM MK Stalin writes to PM Modi

Highlights
He said the requirement is projected to go from the current 440MT to 840MT
He also demanded 20 ISO Cryogenic Containers
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday (May 7) wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting immediate supply of additional medical oxygen, in line with what was agreed in government meetings held on May 1 and 2.
The letter mentions that Tamil Nadu is facing a looming oxygen crisis and that the requirement of medical oxygen is projected to go from the current 440MT to 840MT.
Referring to the National Oxygen Plan, Stalin says that only 220MT was allocated for Tamil Nadu, following which the officials had requested DPIIT for an immediate supply. He added that despite DPITT having agreed to provide 476MT of medical oxygen, such an order has not been issued.

Daily consumption of medical oxygen is projected to increase by 400 tonnes in the next two weeks
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and get the revised orders on medical oxygen allocation for the State implemented.
While the State is taking a number of steps to control the spread of the pandemic, there is a “severe crisis” with regard to availability of medical oxygen.
Letter to PM
Currently, the daily consumption of medical oxygen is around 440 tonnes and is projected to increase by another 400 tonnes in the next two weeks. Unfortunately, in the National Oxygen Plan, the allocation for the State has been given as 220 tonnes only. Since this is untenable, State officers had discussion with officials of DPIIT on May 1 and 2 and it was agreed that at least 476 tonnes will be provided to the State immediately.
