Active School Week (#ASW21)
, part of the Government’s Keep Well campaign, takes place from 26-30 April. All schools are encouraged to build Active School Week into their annual school calendars. It is important also that all Active School Week activities are both fun and inclusive.
Minister Foley said:
“Our one-million strong school community has now returned to in-school learning, and the announcement of this years’ Active School Week events gives great support to schools in their encouragement of activity in children and young people. Being active is important to everyone’s health and wellbeing, and supports children and young people in their learning. ....

Ireland punches above its weight on physical activity promotion but we still have some way to go in getting Ireland active is one of the key findings from new global research which highlights the “silent pandemic of physical inactivity”.
A set of ‘Country Cards’ profiling physical activity in 217 countries has been launched by the Global Observatory for Physical Activity (GoPA!) based on data up to 2019. 
The organisation’s main goal is to reduce the global burden of mortality and morbidity caused by physical inactivity and it consists of physical activity researchers, epidemiologists, public health policy makers and practitioners that catalogue and analyse global data on physical activity and health. ....

Ministers of State Frank Feighan and Jack Chambers publish update on progress of the National Physical Activity Plan
 
Today, Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy, Frank Feighan TD, and Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Sport, Jack Chambers TD, jointly launched the National Physical Activity Plan Implementation Summary Report, 2019. The report’s publication had been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister Feighan said:
“The promotion of physical activity has been a priority for my department in the context of the implementation of Healthy Ireland. I am very pleased with the progress which has been made to date and which is detailed in both this Implementation Summary Report and previous reports for 2017 and 2018. ....

Minister of State at the Department of Health with responsibility for Public Health, Well Being and the National Drugs Strategy Frank Feighan T.D is lending his support to the Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership Feel Good 5K podcast and training plan to support people to take exercise to improve their health and fitness in 2021 while complying with current Covid-19 Government 5K travel guidelines.
In launching the Feel Good 5K Minister Feighan stated: I want to commend Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, and Sligo County Council on this great new initiative.
One of my priorities as Minister for Public Health is the implementation of the National Physical Activity Plan, by which we want to increase the number of people taking part in physical activity. ....
