(Photo by Liwayway Yparraguirre) DAGUPAN CITY - The city government here started Monday vaccinating children aged five to 11 years old against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Dr. John Fernandez, a critical care specialist and vice president of the Philippine Pediatric Society-Northern Luzon Chapter, said their group fully supports the campaign to inoculate this age group. "Huwag matakot.Yong apprehensions na baka lagnatin, masakit, o nanghihina, ang mga ito ay typical reaction sa mga pasyente naming na binabakunahan ng mga bakuna na usual na ibinibigay natin (Don't be afraid. The apprehensions that they might get fever, sickness, weakness, these are typical reactions of the patients getting vaccinated even by other vaccines)," he said in an interview on Tuesday. Fernandez's eight-year-old only son was among those who were inoculated. "Starting January, we have encountered children who got the severe effects of Covid-19. We also fear the multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children who got Covid-19 but were mild or symptomatic cases. However, they might get the syndrome in a matter of weeks after. So we ask the parents to have their children get immunized," he said. Region 1 Medical Center Infectious Disease Department and Philippine Pediatric Society Northern Luzon Chapter member, Dr. Arianne Calimlim Samson, called on other parents to step out of their comfort zone and have their children vaccinated. "Before being a doctor, I was a mother of a three-year-old. If given a chance like today's chance and opportunity to bring my child, I would be first to line up," she said. Dr. Charisse Tanlatco, an ophthalmologist, said she decided to have her son vaccinated for two reasons. "First, that it has been proven that the vaccine is safe; none of my relatives and friends abroad whose children had been vaccinated gave negative feedback. The second reason, I want face-to-face classes to be back soon so the children can enjoy their childhood," she said. Front-liner Edlyn Luna from the Nazareth General Hospital said the vaccination is her Valentine's Day gift to her daughter who was the only one left unvaccinated in their household. Gabriel Pascual of the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) said despite being vaccinated, they can bring home the virus thus, the best way to protect their children is to have them inoculated too. Dagupan City Schools Division Superintendent Aguedo Fernandez lauded the city government for its effort. He said this is a big boost to the goal of the Department of Education to expand the number of schools for the limited face-to-face classes. "If we ask the experts, the economic managers of the country and even abroad, they would also say that the pediatric vaccination will pave the way for us to go back to full face-to-face classes. And with students (in all levels) out in full force, it will really spur the economy even more," Mayor Marc Brian Lim said in an interview. Lim also asked the representative of the Department of Health Ilocos Region for the continuous supply of jabs for the new age group as the city vaccination team has proven their efficiency. For the schedule of vaccination, he said they have to register athttps://vaccine.dagupan.gov.ph. (PNA) }
