Citizenship (Amendment) Act: The notification of the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, which has been delayed by over four years, finally enforces the CAA across the entire country.
Just before the Lok Sabha polls, Ministry of Home Affairs notified the Citizenship Amendment Rules under the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA), enabling minorities facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan to obtain Indian citizenship. An online system for application, processing & grant of citizenship under CAA is being explored by home ministry.
Questioning the timing of the notification, the Congress said it is “evidently designed” to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam, and aimed at “managing the headlines” after the “Supreme Court’s severe strictures on the electoral bonds scandal”.
