“It was small compared to the costs, but it definitely helped with expenses I didn't need to tack onto my student loan. Real life doesn't stop just because you’re studying: the car still needs a warrant of fitness, children need clothes.” Wood has a background in finance, and in more recent years as a teacher aide, working at Ngatimoti School and Motueka High School. She has a passion for literacy, which she hoped to channel into a role teaching new entrants, she said. “Teaching is one of those jobs with genuine meaning; it’s a community service in my mind.”
