This spring, as the weather warmed and the trees and plants awoke from their winter slumber, it occurred to me that the landscape took on a very impressionistic quality, which naturally got me thinking about art. Impressionistic it’s a word that is often used to describe a painting, and has indeed become something of a catch-all term for any two-dimensional artwork that is neither highly realistic nor decidedly non-representational. But what does it really mean, anyway? And from where does it originate?
