While economies around the globe are now recovering from the worst of the pandemic, all are currently in a weaker fiscal position and have much bigger government debts than they did at the end of 2019. Within the emerging markets (EM) community, participants and policymakers are now turning their attention to debt restructurings and other initiatives to reduce the debt of poor countries. Leaving the merits or shortcomings of these initiatives aside, when looking across the EM universe, we see a divergence in the ability to implement fiscal adjustments that would both reduce a country’s debt burden and provide a sufficient buffer against future shocks. This article demonstrates how government expenditures in particular factor into our security selection process within the emerging market debt sector.

The Eagles’ performance in the United States will live forever in the memories of those who experienced it, not least because of those vibrant triumphs against Brazil and Argentina in the semi-final and final.
Names like Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Celestine Babayaro will forever be remembered among Nigeria’s all-time greats, and their exploits will indelibly be emblazoned in the minds of those who witnessed their feats.
This week on Goal, we are delighted to speak with one of the legends of that side—the great Garba Lawal—as he sits down with Shina Oludare to discuss his memories of that remarkable triumph in Atlanta.

Federal prosecutors on Monday announced that a Nigerian national has agreed to plead guilty in connection with a variety of online fraud schemes, including catfishing. Macpherson Osemwegie, 32, who lives in Boston, will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office for Massachusetts announced. Osemwegie and co-conspirators perpetrated romance scams, also known as catfishing, and other schemes designed to trick victims into sending money to bank accounts and debit cards that he controlled, the prosecution said. "To carry out the schemes, Osemwegie and his co-conspirators used false foreign passports in others’ names to open numerous bank accounts, and in turn directed the victims to send money to these accounts," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement. The charge carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $1 million. A plea hearing in the case has not yet been scheduled.

Monkeypox outbreak in US: What to know

Print this article
The United States is experiencing a limited outbreak of the monkeypox virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently confirmed that in mid-July, a Texas man who had traveled from Lagos, Nigeria, to Atlanta, Georgia, had contracted the disease. The CDC is monitoring over 200 people the man had contact with and asking them to quarantine for about three weeks.
Monkeypox is typically found in the tropical forests of Central and West Africa and is carried by animals, including primates. The illness usually begins with a fever, muscle aches, chills, and swollen lymph nodes and then grows into a full-blown rash of pox-like blisters.
