Onions in NegOr still sold at P600 to P750 per kilo

COSTLY ONIONS. "Sibuying", a variety of small onions shown in the photograph, is sold at around PHP400 a kilo in the supermarkets in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. The Department of Trade and Industry in the province said there is no significant decline in the prices of onions in recent weeks. (Photo by Judy Flores Partlow) DUMAGUETE CITY - The prices of onions in Negros Oriental province have not yet seen any significant change these past weeks and are still very expensive, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here said on Friday. A partial report from the DTI-Negros Oriental showed that as of Jan. 20, prices of red onions here were from PHP660 to PHP750 a kilo; red onions (imported) at PHP490 to PHP580 a kilo; and white onions from PHP360 to PHP 400 a kilo. Even the "sibuying", a variety of small onions, is still costly and sold at PHP400 a kilo. "These are supermarket prices, which are higher by about PHP100 a kilo compared to those sold at the wet or public markets," said Nimfa Virtucio, DTI-Negros Oriental provincial director. The monitoring team is still out in the field to gather the latest pricing. Her office conducts price monitoring every Friday based on a memorandum issued by the higher office as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., she said. During the holidays, onions were around at the same price but the Jan. 6 monitoring of the DTI here showed a minimal drop when it was sold between PHP500 and PHP 600 a kilo, she added. On Dec. 29, the Department of Agriculture issued DA Circular No. 12 setting an SRP (Suggested Retail Price) of PHP250 a kilo for red onions sold in wet markets and had been in effect until the first week of January. Virtucio said the DTI can only monitor the prices but it does not have the authority to set a new ceiling until the higher office tells them. (PNA) }

DTI sees growth of Tanjay City's famous delicacy

WELL-LOVED DELICACY. The famous "bodbod" in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental is getting a boost with the passage of an ordinance naming it as the city's One Town, One Product. Small businesses engaged in making the famous rice roll will receive a boost with the measure in place, the Department of Trade and Industry said on Monday (Aug. 22, 2022). (PNA file photo by Judy Flores Partlow) DUMAGUETE CITY - The passage of an ordinance making the famous "bodbod" or rice roll in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental as its One Town, One Product (OTOP), is seen to bolster the income of the small businesses in the area, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here said on Monday. DTI-Negros Oriental provincial director Nimfa Virtucio told the Philippine News Agency in an interview that with the measure in place, the local government unit (LGU) will allocate a budget to "professionalize the industry" and help the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in the business. Virtucio said with the passage of the ordinance, improvements will be made as to the production of the bodbod, such as regulations in size and uniformity in taste, among others. She noted that in the absence of "regulation", some bodbod pieces are currently thinner than the others. "We are also willing to help these producers in coming up with a packaging that is acceptable or competitive in the world market," she said. The DTI official also noted the need to improve the shelf life of the delicacy, which tends to spoil in just a few days with the highly perishable coconut milk as one of its ingredients. Organizing these bodbod makers and accrediting them with the LGU will also give them leverage in the marketing sector, she said. The Tanjay City OTOP ordinance, crafted by the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI), is the first of its kind in the province and in Region 7, said Dumaguete-based businessman Edward Du. Du, a former NOCCI president and ex-regional director of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Central Visayas (PHCCI), is a strong supporter of MSMEs and the passage of the OTOP ordinances in Negros Oriental to help small businesses prosper. The ordinance, which was unanimously passed by the city council last Friday, said there are more than 100 homegrown bodbod makers in Tanjay. The native delicacy has been around for over a century and is closely associated with the city. It is now famous not just among the locals but also among domestic and international tourists who savor this delicacy and even take some home with them as "pasalubong" (souvenir). It is best eaten with "sikwate" or local chocolate drink or with fresh, ripe mangoes. Two other OTOP ordinances being pushed in Negros Oriental are the Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate in Valencia town and the Baslay coffee in Dauin town, Virtucio said. (PNA) }

DTI monitors sugar prices, assures ample supply in NegOr

SUGAR PRICE MONITORING. The Department of Trade and Industry in Negros Oriental is monitoring the price of white sugar in supermarkets. DTI provincial director Nimfa Virtucio said on Monday (Aug. 22, 2022) there is no reported supply shortage of the commodity in the province. (PNA photo by Judy Flores Partlow) DUMAGUETE CITY - The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Oriental is monitoring the prices of refined or white sugar and has not monitored any sugar supply shortage in the province, an official said on Monday. DTI provincial director Nimfa Virtucio told the Philippine News Agency in an interview that the price monitoring of refined or white sugar is pursuant to a memorandum from Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual, dated Aug. 19, on the monitoring of its retail price and purchase limit. "Based on the memo, we are now monitoring the prices of white sugar sold at the Robinsons Supermarket in Dumaguete City, as it is one of the participating stores that are listed in an agreement with the Office of the President," Virtucio said. The memorandum referenced the agreement made by the Office of the President and the owners of Robinsons, SM, and Puregold supermarkets to set a retail price of PHP70 a kilo of refined white and or washed sugar "until supplies last". Also, a purchase limit has been set to only one kilo of refined white sugar per customer. Virtucio said that while Robinsons is the only supermarket in this capital that is included in the memorandum, she believes that other grocery stores and supermarkets will follow suit in the price cap of refined sugar due to "market competition". Brown sugar and other forms of sugar are not included in the memorandum. Meanwhile, she said her office has not received any reports as yet of a perceived shortage of sugar supply although many small businesses are complaining about the increase in prices in the past weeks. The DTI provincial director clarified that it is the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) that oversees and regulates the sugar industry in the country. "We do not have the authority to impose price caps on sugar as it is not in the list of basic commodities covered by DTI, however, as our mandate includes consumer protection, we are including the monitoring of sugar prices in the absence of an SRA office here," she said. Virtucio also could not yet verify reports of a shortage of carbonated soft drinks even as many people are already posting on social media about the limited supply of certain bottled and canned drinks. She is hoping the Local Price Coordinating Council in the province will be activated to determine the real status of sugar and its by-products in Negros Oriental to avert any artificial shortage or hoarding. MSME council supports creation of NegOr electronic biz registry

ELECTRONIC BIZ REGISTRY. Negros Oriental Governor Pryde Henry Teves (center) is flanked by Edward Du of the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry and DTI provincial director Nimfa Virtucio, during a meeting on Wednesday (July 20, 2022). The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development Council, which the governor chairs, passed a resolution supporting the creation of an electronic business registry. (Photo courtesy of Edward Du) DUMAGUETE CITY - The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development Council on Wednesday passed a resolution supporting a proposed provincial ordinance for the creation of an electronic business registry for databank and other purposes. MSMED Council co-chair Edward Du told the Philippine News Agency that the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) crafted the proposed ordinance and was presented during the meeting which Governor Pryde Henry Teves convened. Teves sits as chairperson of the MSMED Council. Du, former NOCCI president and former Central Visayas regional governor of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the proposed provincial ordinance contains an 11-point agenda that would basically cater to MSMEs. "Hopefully, Governor Teves will endorse the proposed ordinance and convene his department heads and perhaps the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, specifically the vice governor, so that the issues and concerns that need legislative action or ordinance will be discussed," Du said in mixed English and Cebuano. One of the highlights of the proposed ordinance is the creation of the Negros Oriental electronic business registry databank, he said. This will be a repository of all business information covering all MSMEs in the province, and will also provide training support services, promote trade and investments through electronic networking, and facilitate business partnerships among local MSMEs and their suppliers and business partners, he added. Du said having an electronic business registry will help the MSMEs in the province for easy and convenient access to market and trade, among others. Another highlight is the creation of the MSMED Coordinating Board, to be composed of representatives from various government agencies, to coordinate the activities of the MSMEs. In the same meeting, Department of Trade and Industry provincial director Nimfa Virtucio also presented the national MSMED plan framework and the 2020 accomplishment of the agency. The DTI here is hoping that the governor will come up with a synchronized plan for agencies involved in aiding MSMEs through various programs and projects. (PNA) }
