Sir — I concur wholeheartedly with Tom Fennelly (‘Broadband firms are getting away with it’, Letters, May 18). To his list of misleading services such companies often provide, I would like to add a further grievance.

Biographers of George Orwell have pointed out that he was obsessed with rats. He may have been called upon to shoot elephants as policeman Eric Blair on duty in Burma, but later, while slumming it in Paris as a grease-mired plongeur in the kitchens and cellars of seedy hotels and restaurants, he was confronted with a smaller and nastier protagonist, Rattus norvegicus, whose threat to human health could be calculated as being more immediate than the occasional rogue elephant shambling through a jungle village.
