Former Atomic Energy Commission chairman Srikumar Banerjee dead


Banerjee, who was in his 70s, had recovered from COVID-19 last month, they said.
He retired as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy in 2012.
Banerjee also served as the director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) for six years till 2010.
A metallurgy engineer from the IIT Kharagpur, Banerjee joined the BARC after completing his B Tech degree, and rose to become the director of the premier scientific institution.
Banerjee s work focused on physical metallurgy and material science.
He was a recipient of many awards in his career, including the Padma Shri in 2005 and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1989. ....

Nuclear Power Corp to spend Rs 18,000 cr on capital expenditure in FY22


Atomic power generation company Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) plans to spend about Rs 18,000 crore as capital expenditure this fiscal, said top company official.
He also said the first pour of concrete for the construction of two more 1,000 MW units (Units 5 and 6) at Kudankulam is expected to happen this year and the 700 MW unit at Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) will begin commercial generation in September 2021.
This fiscal we will be spending about Rs 18,000 crore as capital expenditure on our ongoing projects. The funding will be through a mix of internal accruals, central government budgetary support and long term borrowings. The first two will be about 30 per cent and the borrowings will be about 70 per cent of the project cost, S.K. Sharma, Chairman & Managing Director told IANS. ....

L&T bags significant deals across multiple business segments


The heavy engineering arm of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won significant contracts for its various business segmentsin Q4 of FY21.
L&T Heavy Engineering has secured order for 12 Steam Generators (SGs) from NPCIL for the 3x700 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR). The fleet order for reactor headers and pressurizers for GHAVP 1&2 units were received in the earlier quarter. The fleet program consists of constructing 10 units of 700 MWe PHWR with indigenous technology.
L&T Heavy Engineering also won a critical reactor system package order for IOCL s Petrochemical project. Other notable orders include Hydroprocessing Reactors for the Renewable diesel & Biofuel project for prestigious refinery majors from USA & Europe; Reactor with internals for IOCL Barauni and a service contract for IOCL Paniipat PTA project. ....
