South Korea on June 21 successfully launched a domestically developed rocket and put satellites into orbit, becoming the seventh country in the world to do so and opening the door for future development of its space program under the new president.
South Korea's first domestically produced space launch vehicle failed due to a loose helium tank. The three-stage KSLV-II Nuri rocket had delivered mixed results for a test launch that represented a major leap for the country's ambitious space plans. President Moon Jae-in said had said that all three stages of the rocket worked, taking it to an altitude of 700 kilometres, and the 1.5-tonne payload separated successfully.
Live footage showed the 154 foot rocket soaring into the air with bright yellow flames shooting out of its engines following blastoff.
Nuri, Seoul’s first domestically produced space launch vehicle, completed its flight sequence but failed to put a dummy satellite in orbit. Still, it showcases the country’s advances in technology for commercial and military purposes, and comes as an arms race gains momentum in Asia.
