Waikato River Trails and Rowing New Zealand worked on riparian planting projects along the Waikato River in 2020. “It is wide-ranging, from individuals, to marae groups, community groups, catchment groups, regional councils and Government agencies like the Department of Conservation.” Applications opened in mid-June and would close mid-August. “Last year was a big one, we had 59 applications asking for more than $13m of funding when we only had $6m to give out. “We thought there would have been fewer last year because of Covid but perhaps people were at home coming up with project ideas. There was just a lot of interest and I expect it to be similar this year.”
