Nanograins make for a seismic shift
New research finds the low-viscosity, rate-strengthening properties of rock nanocrystals may influence fault zone instability, offering a new explanation for earthquake formation both in Earth’s crust and deep in subduction zones. The research was led by Matej Pec and Hongyu Sun from MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.
