Posted: July 27, 2021 Evacuation Order Issued for Lazy Lake area Due to increased fire behaviour on the Bill Nye Mountain Fire and based on recommendations from the BC Wildfire Service, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has issued an Evacuation Order for the Lazy Lake area, effective Tuesday, July 27 at 7 p.m. “The safety of the public and fire crews is our top priority,” said RDEK Information Officer Loree Duczek. “These decisions are not made lightly; and everyone within the evacuation order area needs to leave immediately.” The Evacuation Order will include 41 properties in the Lazy Lake area. Under the direction of the RCMP, Search and Rescue volunteers will be delivering the order to the affected properties.

Posted: July 21, 2021 Evacuation Order issued for two properties due to fire Given the current fire conditions, anticipated wind event, and recommendations of the BC Wildfire Service, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has issued an Evacuation Order for two properties east of Saugum Lake, near the Bill Nye Mountain wildfire. “One owner owns both properties affected by the order and is in regular contact with the BC Wildfire Service,” said RDEK Information Officer Loree Duczek. “The Evacuation Alert for 53 properties in the Lazy Lake, Lakit Lake and Holmes Road area, including one property on Wildhorse Forest Service road remains in effect with no changes at this time. However, we are encouraging everyone within the Alert area to remain ready and prepared to leave on a moment’s notice should conditions worsen.”

Posted: May 26, 2021 Evacuation Alert remains in effect in Fairmont The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) this morning reports that the Evacuation Alert remains in effect for about 200 properties in Fairmont Hot Springs. “Accumulated debris has reduced the capacity of the creeks to withstand a future event. Planning for debris removal is underway,” reported RDEK information Officer Loree Duczek. “There was no measurable precipitation overnight at our Fairmont weather station. The creeks are running clear this morning,” she added. “There are no significant changes to report at this time. There is a chance of thunderstorm activity throughout the day today and we will be continuing to keep an eye on the weather,” Duczek said.
