An Oglethorpe County sheriff’s deputy was charged Thursday with two counts of aggravated assault after authorities said he shot at a car that fled from a traffic stop in Athens-Clarke County. Michael Norton Davis, 35, of Colbert was fired after an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation requested by Athens-Clarke police, which had jurisdiction in the matter. The U.S. Forest Service is conducting a prescribed burn Wednesday of about 2,781 acres of forestland in the upper part of Greene County and in southern Oglethorpe County. The controlled burn is conducted by persons trained in the fires, which reduce fuel loads on the forest floor and reduces the risk of wildfires, according to the forest service. The burn may present smoke to residents of Clarke, Greene and Oglethorpe County, but forest service official Tim Kolnick said the winds are shifting today toward the east and northeast so smoke may not be a factor in Athens.
