This summer, the Yukon River had its weakest Chinook and chum runs in recorded history. Each week, Serena Fitka, the director of the Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association, leads villagers and managers from up and down the river through weekly teleconferences where they can discuss the state of the fishery. This morning she’ll be breaking down some of the issues the people on the river are facing.    City Manager Pete Williams said that one reason for clearing out the thick tree brush along the river embankment is because the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city need access to the riprap for maintenance. Riprap refers to the large boulders along the riverfront.        Williams said that the city didn’t have a goal of where those camping along the embankment should go, he just said that he wanted the area clear.    “I don't think I really go into that with a goal on where the homeless are going to go. It's not just homeless, it's people drinking,” said Williams.

  When Tuluksak lost its water plant and source of drinking water to a fire on January 16, grant applications for a new one were already underway. The water plant was an old building that needed to be replaced. According to a representative from the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, the building had lasted 40 years, double its projected lifespan.    The Environmental Protection Agency had written the village an estimate for a new water plant and washeteria back in 2018.   After Tuluksak lost its water plant to a fire, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation installed a temporary water treatment plant in the school. The plant pipes up water from the Tuluksak River, but that system is too fragile to withstand the ice floes released during breakup. YKHC workers will remove the temporary plant from the river for the time being, and reinstall it when the river ice is gone.
