Lack of Student Technology Fee impacts UC Berkeley


For Kenneth Lien, campus sophomore and executive director of Cal Hacks, the failed renewal of the Student Technology Fee, or STF, during the ASUC elections in April is a “loss of a safety net.”
Without the STF a campus-based student fee referendum that provided all UC Berkeley students with equitable access to a range of technology services Lien said he will no longer have access to a Wi-Fi hot spot and laptop that he relied on to take virtual classes during the pandemic, which was lent to him by Moffitt Library.
“The fund really made success; it gave everyone equal opportunity and removed technology from being a barrier to excelling in school,” Lien said. “It’s unfortunate that the fund didn’t get renewed, especially because I personally and a lot of my peers have been able to continue school and handle a virtual transition because of it.” ....

Student Technology Fee on ASUC elections ballot for renewal this April

The Student Technology Fund fee, which was recently added to the April ballot for renewal by the ASUC Senate, allows students to access Student Technology Helpdesk and Open Computing Facility services.
The Daily Cal received funds from the Student Tech Fund in 2017 and 2019. 
Adobe Creative Cloud, Zoom Pro and laptop borrowing programs are all services covered by the Student Technology Fund, or STF, fee which was recently added to the April ballot for renewal by the ASUC Senate.
The existing fee totals $51 per student every semester and provides UC Berkeley undergraduates, graduates and professional school students with a range of technology services and support. Funds from the STF allow access to Student Technology Helpdesk and Open Computing Facility, or OCF, services, as well as software and project grants for student technology initiatives. ....
