Deadly cobra injured by bird snare gets help in eastern India
A five-foot-long monocled cobra got trapped in a snare meant for trapping birds in a forest in eastern India.
On 26 February, a local resident called Snake Helpline saying a snake had entered his house near Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The injured cobra had tugged desperately to escape the snare, plastic strings cut deeply into its skin and flesh, leaving it in severe pain.
A volunteer, Arun Baral, went to the house and rescued the snake.
Seeing its condition, he brought it to Subhendu Mallik, General Secretary of Snake Helpline, who in turn took it to Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) for treatment. ....

“Infection had perhaps spread among pregnant elephants. As the jumbos were stressed due to pregnancy, they were susceptible to infection. All deaths have been caused by Haemorrhage Septicaemia,” said Pratap Kesari Khamari, Additional Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
Centre for Wildlife Health, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar has already confirmed the cause of deaths, while Indian Veterinary Institute has taken samples for further study. Meanwhile, a Central team visited the sanctuary area to assess the situation. ....

Retired agriculture scientist attempts revival of aromatic rice varieties of Odisha | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha is home to hundreds of aromatic rice varieties which are on the verge of extinction. To revive the aromatic small grain rice varieties of the state, rice scientist and honorary professor in plant breeding and genetics at the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), S R Das has started a project to collect the seed of these indigenous rice varieties and promote its cultivation among farmers.
“Odisha produces aromatic rice similar to the famous Basmati rice and have qualities like pleasant fragrance with small and round grains, white colour and softness without much elongation on cooking. Unfortunately, due to lack of systematic effort for the collection, evaluation and genetic improvement of these much-valued short grained scented rices of the state, these varieties are slowly disappearing,” said Das, who collected seeds of these varieties from across the state and started a project of cultivating and collecting s ....
