Oshawa in mourning after death of former long-time councillor Posted on February 8, 2021 by oshawaexpress in CITY, NEWS Former long-time Oshawa City Councillor John Aker has died. Aker passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4 surrounded by friends and family at the age of 78 years. “Aker dedicated his life to his family, and the service of others within the City of Oshawa, and the Region of Durham,” states his obituary. Aker was first elected to Oshawa City Council as an Alderman in 1973 serving as both city and regional councillor from 1974 to 1997 when he stepped away to join the Ontario Municipal Board. A 10-year member of the board, Aker returned to local government in 2010 where he served two more terms as a city and regional councillor. ....
Brock Township mayor loses battle with cancer Posted on January 27, 2021 by oshawaexpress in NEWS, REGION (Photo courtesy Township of Brock) The Brock Township community and the Region of Durham are in mourning after the passing of Brock Mayor Debbie Bath-Hadden following a long battle with cancer. Bath-Hadden passed away early in the morning on Jan. 24 at home with her husband and family by her side. In a recent statement, Brock Deputy Mayor Ted Smith said Bath-Hadden was a “decisive leader who always put the needs of our community and residents first.” “She spent years in public service as a strong champion of Township and Regional issues and served the community with devotion,” he says. ....
