The installation of departing Bishop of Ossory Dermot Farrell as the new Archbishop of Dublin will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2) in St Mary’s Pro Cathedral at 10.30am.
The Principal Celebrant will be Archbishop Farrell. He will be joined by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and His Excellency Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland.
“Since my appointment by Pope Francis on December 29, I have been overwhelmed by the good wishes and support extended to me as I embark upon my new ministry as Archbishop of Dublin, said Archbishop Farrell ahead of the Mass of Thanksgiving. ....

The announcement that Bishop of Ossory Dermot Farrell (66) is to be the new Archbishop of Dublin will come as no great surprise to many priests in the archdiocese, as his name has always been among the front runners since Archbishop Diarmuid Martin made clear his intention to retire on reaching 75 last April.
That he has not done so before now is due to the pandemic.
Odds, so to speak, on Bishop Farell being ‘the man most likely to’ shortened greatly when he was the only bishop to accompany Ireland’s four Catholic Archbishops at their meeting with Taoiseach Micheál Martin on October 28th last. ....

Bishop Dermot Farrell 'wasn't expecting' appointment as new Archbishop of Dublin

He succeeds Diarmuid Martin, whose retirement request has been accepted by Pope Francis.
Archbishop Martin celebrated his 75th birthday earlier this year and, under Vatican rules, members of the clergy must offer to resign when they reach that age.
Archbishop-elect Farrell was born in Co Westmeath and was ordained a priest in 1980.
He went on to complete his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and served as the vice president of St Patrick s College in Maynooth from 1993 to 1996.
Dr Farrell was promoted to president of St Patrick s in 1996 and stayed in that role until 2007.
He was appointed as the Bishop of Ossory by Pope Francis in 2018. ....

Departing Bishop of Ossory Dermot Farrell has said he was very happy and fulfilled during his time in this diocese, as he takes up his new role as Archbishop of Dublin.
It was confirmed earlier that - effective today - Archbishop-elect Farrell will replace the Most Reverend Archbishop Diarmuid Martin whose request for retirement has been accepted by Pope Francis.
