《红旗颂》首演于1965年第六届“上海之春”的开幕式，深情描绘了1949年10月1日开国大典上，天安门上空第一面五星红旗冉冉升起的庄严情景，由上海交响乐团、上海电影乐团、上海管弦乐团联合首演后，迅速传遍全国。
《红旗颂》其实是“上海之春”的命题之作。1965年2月，上海各家文艺院团纷纷报上备选节目，党组捋了一遍后，觉得歌颂祖国、歌颂党、歌颂人民军队的作品不够多，质量也不够高。一位老前辈提议吕其明赶写一个，他吓了一跳，连忙摇头，说自己没这个能力，5月就要演出，时间太紧了。但老前辈们都很赞成，觉得提议可行，指挥家黄贻钧甚至建议，乐曲的名字就叫《红旗颂》。
被老前辈们信任、委以重任，吕其明又紧张又兴奋，觉得应该拼搏一次。从哪个角度切入呢？他想到了自己的过去，想到了战争年代，他经历� ....
